Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT)
Animal Assisted Therapy refers to spending time with animal/s during their therapeutic process. It usually works towards creating an emotional bond between humans and animals. AAT is used in conjunction with the traditional forms of therapy. Various mental health practitioners include therapy animals in their practice. AAT usually begins like any other psychotherapy session as the initial sessions are more about getting a better understanding of the issues. The therapist also evaluates if the client is ready to be associated with the therapy animal or not. The therapy animal is helpful in building rapport between the therapist and the client. Dogs are the most commonly used animals because they are easier to communicate with and are emotionally engaging and interactive.
