Couples Therapy is psychotherapy to help improve the relationship between partners. Any couple can seek couples therapy at any stage of their relationship regardless of their race, faith, religion, sexual religion, marital status or age. Until the late 20th century, relationship counselling was often informally done by friends, family, religious leaders and allied. The professional service of relationship counselling and couples therapy is a rather recent development. The first step in Couples Therapy is usually getting to know the couple better, helping the partners comprehend each other and navigating them to a better understanding of themselves. This requires delving into the history of the relationship and also the background of each partner. After the initial session/s of gathering insights, the therapist will help identify the issue/s they are dealing with and focus on working through them by establishing goals; structuring the sessions in a way to help the partners. The partners gain valuable insights into the dynamics of their relationship that might be the root of the issue being faced by them. They can thereafter work through those by modifying their behavior, perception of their relationship and also learn inter-personal communication and comprehension.
