Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT)
Dance Movement Therapy is simply referred to as Dance Therapy or DMT. It uses movement and dance steps to help emotional, intellectual and motor related functions. It is a form of expressive arts based therapy and works on the relationship between the emotions of a person and the body movements to work through them. The therapist utilizes movements of the body to help a client achieve an integration with their cognitive, bodily and social aspects of their life. DMT is different from dancing on music as the therapist guides the clients with movements that helps express their concerns, take cues from their non-verbal actions and express their emotions in a therapeutic manner. There are techniques like mirroring and metaphors, often put to work in the process of DMT. A person does not need to be a skilled dancer to seek DMT as this therapy is not about dancing but rather it is a process where guided movements help.
It can be helpful with various issues:
- Arthritis, Pain Relief, Depression, Anxiety, Low Self Esteem, Eating Disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
