Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
Dialectical Behaviour therapy (DBT) is a type of psychotherapy that mainly draws from the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
It is a modified form of CBT which mainly works towards helping clients in learning to live in the present, develop healthier coping skills, regulation of emotions, and work on their interpersonal realtionships.
DBT was originally developed to help clients with Borderline Personality disorder (BPD) but it has been found to be effective in various other mental health related concerns.
The major skills worked during the DBT is helping the client to work on their mindfulness skills, acceptance of the present, and working towards better crisis management skills.
It was developed by Dr. Linehan et. al during the late 1980s to help people with BPD as CBT wasn’t very much effective in BPD clients.
During DBT, the client and therapist work in collaboration to help the client in resolving their issues, emotional regulation, distress resolution, and develop better ways to cope and react to situations.
DBT has been found to be helpful in various mental health conditions:-
- Bipolar Disorder Anxiety Disorder Suicidal Thought-process OCD Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Depression Borderline Personality Disorder Substance Use Disorder
