Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a family-oriented approach that focuses on the betterment of the relationship between the parent and the child. The therapists work on the facilitation of the interaction between the parent and the child and aiding the development of parenting strategies that helps promote a healthier, familial relationship and also decrease behavioral problems.
PCIT is often found to be effective in children who have been through trauma, experienced any form of abuse, conduct-related problems and behavioral issues. Parents can take the help of PCIT to work on their communication and relationship with their children. The basic framework of PCIT is carried out in two stages: enhancement of the relationship and compliance & discipline. The beginning of the therapeutic process includes the therapists talking to the parents about the tools and techniques that will be utilized in each phase. The therapist observes the play between the parents and the children and also equips them with interpersonal skills. The gradual process is also tracked and communicated with the parents. PCIT helps parents develop positive characteristics and thereby improve the relationship between themselves and the children. Children, in the process are taught to adapt to healthier behaviors and promote a healthier relationship between the family.
It can be helpful with various issues:
- Building a positive interaction pattern between the parent and the child
Development of better parenting skills
Reduction of any sort of abuse
Reduction of behavioral concerns in the children
Enhancement of communication skills and interaction amongst the family members.
