Queer Affirmative Therapy
Queer Affirmative Therapy is specifically for LGBTQ+ to provide a safe and non-judgmental space to help them navigate through discrimination. It addresses the needs of LGBTQ+ society and takes an inter sectional approach to help navigate through a hetero normative society, homophobia, trans phobia amidst others. LGBTQ+ is an abbreviated term used to refer to the various communities included in the LGBTTTQQIAA - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, 2/Two-Spirit, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Ally, Pan-sexual, A-gender, Bi-gender, Gender Queer, Gender Variant and Pan-gender.
The affirmative term is the key to Queer Affirmative Therapy as affirmative refers to the practice of affirming the experiences of people from the LGBTQIA communities. Queer Affirmative Therapy is different from Queer Friendly Therapy. These are often used interchangeably but are different as QFT is about a safe space that is accepting of people from the queer community. A Queer Friendly therapist is familiar with the LGBTQIA+ issues but not fully equipped to help deal with their issues. Queer Affirmative Therapists, however, are certified and specifically trained in Queer Affirmative practices and have knowledge and expertise in the wide range of issues faced by the LGBTQ+ Community.
